The hosts nearly opened the scoring early in the first period when Evgenii Dadonov broke in alone on goaltender Stuart Skinner but couldn’t convert. In the second period, Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch reunited McDavid and Draisaitl on the same line, and the move paid off immediately. Draisaitl netted his ninth playoff goal on Edmonton’s fourth shot of the game. Just over three minutes later, Hyman scored his 12th of the playoffs after a scramble in front, giving Edmonton a 2-0 lead. However, the Oilers then made a critical mistake. Brett Kulak turned the puck over in his own zone, Jamie Benn pounced, and Tyler Seguin scored on the rebound to cut the lead in half. Late in the third period, Jason Robertson’s shot deflected off Dadonov to Seguin, who tapped in the equalizer for one of the easiest goals of his career.
In overtime, McDavid took a four-minute penalty, giving Dallas a golden opportunity to win, but the Stars hit the post. McDavid himself had a chance to end it late in the first OT but hesitated, allowing Jake Oettinger to make the save. Finally, in the second overtime, McDavid scored the game-winner.
