Tragedy has struck the motorcycle racing world once again. Czech rider Kamil Holan, 48, died on Thursday during practice for the North West 200, a road race held just days before the legendary and highly dangerous Isle of Man TT.

The incident occurred in the Superbike qualifying session at Station Corner, one of the fastest turns on the circuit. Red flags were shown, and after a delay in subsequent sessions, the organization confirmed that a competitor had been killed. “A competitor in the 2026 Briggs Equipment North West 200 has died following an incident at Station Corner on the NW200 circuit during this morning’s Superbike qualifying session,” officials stated.

Initially, the rider’s identity was not released, but it was confirmed that his family had given consent for the event to continue. Later, the Hefty74 – Motoškola team announced Holan’s death. “The engines fell silent today. Our Kamil Holán has passed away. With indescribable pain in our hearts, we announce that today, in the second North West 200 qualifying session, our beloved Kamil Holán left us forever,” the team’s statement began.

“He died a man who breathed motorcycle sport. Kamil was not only an incredible rider and a legend of Czech road racing, who bravely conquered the toughest tracks in the world from Hořice to the Isle of Man. He was above all a wonderful friend, a man of great character. Kamil, you were an inspiration, support and companion in life and on the track. Your humility, passion and smile will be missed every second. Thank you for everything you have given and been for us. Your legacy will live on in Hefty74 and in our hearts,” the statement continued, before offering condolences to his family and loved ones.

The North West 200, established in 1929, has now claimed a total of 20 lives, making it one of the most dangerous road races in the world. The last fatality before Holan was Malachi Mitchell-Thomas in 2016. Thursday’s sessions were eventually canceled and rescheduled for Saturday. With the family’s consent, the rest of the race weekend will proceed as planned.

Holan was a veteran of road racing. He won the Newcomers A race at the Manx Grand Prix in 2012 and had been competing in the Isle of Man TT since 2018, with a best result of 20th place. His death serves as another grim reminder of the inherent dangers of motorcycle road racing.
